1. Details of this post
This is a core placement in General Adult Psychiatry with both
inpatient, outpatient and community experience in a well defined
catchment area and involving experience with a multi-disciplinary
team. 11% of Bolton population is made of ethnic groups, which offers
opportunities to manage patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.
This Trust is undergoing a number of changes in line with the national
transformation agenda giving opportunities to be involved in service
improvement.

2. DUTIES OF TRAINEE AND EXPERIENCE GAINED
Outpatient clinics: The SpR will run the outpatient clinic atleast
twice a week with a good mix of new and follow up patients.
Inpatient management: ward rounds are conducted twice a week, with
the SPR running one ward round independently under supervision of
the consultant. This gives opportunities to work with clinicians
from different backgrounds such as AOT staff, MAPPA teams etc.
Community psychiatry: The SpR will be actively with the Community
Mental Health Team. This will involve attending the weekly team
meetings, liaising with the teams to arrange domiciliary visits,
attending safeguarding meetings and carrying out mental health act
assessments for their patients.
Medico-legal work: As a part of inpatient commitments SPRs will
be involved in assessing and managing patients under the mental
health act. This will involve writing tribunal reports and giving
evidence in MHA tribunals. There will be opportunities to manage
patients under the community treatment order.
Liaison work: currently Bolton does not have a liaison team for
working age patients, which is offered by consultants for patients
under their catchment area. Trainees interested in this area will
have opportunities to work with consultants and manage patients
with physical co-morbidities.
Crisis management: This post gives opportunities to manage ones
own patients during crisis with crisis team /HBT approach along
with input from crisis team staff.
3. Junior trainee / medical student support and supervision
This post has F2-CT3 trainee, which helps in gaining experience
in junior trainee supervision and teaching. Medical students are
regularly allocated to this post as a part of their psychiatry placements,
and senior trainees are encouraged to be involved in their teaching
and supervision.
4. ON CALL COMMITMENT
The SpR will participate in a 1:7 rotation with consultant cover.
1B banding.
5. TEACHING / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

• Foundation trainees
• ST trainees
The SpR will be encouraged to become involved in the teaching program
for psychiatric trainees, foundation year doctors and medical students.
6. RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The SpR will be encouraged to complete an audit project. You will
be supported by the Audit Department with the Mental Health Trust
in completing the project. The SpRs will be supported in continuing
their research and special interest as part of their SpR training.
7. MANAGEMENT TRAINING
The SpR will be encouraged to be involved in developments of psychiatric
services involving the ongoing changes of psychiatric practice.
The SpR will be encouraged to attend the consultant meetings within
the department.
8. IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL DETAILS (FACILITIES etc)
SPR will have a dedicated room with secretarial support from the
consultant’s secretary. Attendance of CMHT meetings and domiciliary
visits involves travelling locally within Bolton borough. Trainees
will have to apply for car permit to be able to park on the premises
of Royal Bolton Hospital.
