StR/ SPR POST DEATIALS 2009/2010

DESCRIPTION OF PLACEMENT:

The post provides the opportunity to work in a busy and very varied community psychiatric service with time spent within a Community Mental Health team in Barrow in Furness and in joint working with the Crisis Resolution/Home Treatment Team. The post will give excellent exposure to multidisciplinary working, both in a large rural area bordering the Southern fringes of the English Lake District and the more urban areas of Barrow in Furness and Dalton in Furness. The post holder will be able to carry out emergency assessments and follow up work in a wide variety of settings with good support and supervision.

ROLE OF TRAINEE:

The trainee will participate in the psychiatric assessments patients referred by the general practitioners, follow them up and arrange admission to the in patient unit where appropriate. Provide advice and support to the team SHO and attend the weekly single point of access/referral meeting. He/she will hold two outpatient clinic a week where one new patient and up to eight follow up out-patients may be seen. All follow up patients will already be known to the Specialist Registrar.

The trainee will have the opportunity to work with the Community Mental Health Team based at Duddon House and Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team, involving making home visits to contribute to the management of patients with more complex mental health needs who require the involvement of more than one worker.

He or she will participate in the Mental Health Act assessments and would have the opportunity to get involved in the Child protection and Vulnerable Adult case conferences as well as Liaison with police, social services, other agencies and the General Practitioners. There is opportunity to work with a fairly busy liaison service.

ON CALL:

1:8 under Consultant supervision, covering Barrow and Kendal sectors of South Cumbria. The trainee would be expected to provide support and advice to a tier one trainee covering the in patient unit, nursing staff and Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team. He/She would also provide section 12(2) cover in hospital and community.

FACILITIES:

At Dane Garth the Specialist Registrar will have his/her own office with computer access, filing cabinet and phone. There is full secretarial support. There is a library at Furness General Hospital holding psychiatric journals as well as a variety of text and reference books.

SUPERVISION ARRANGEMENTS:

Weekly for an hour by the Educational Supervisor who would also be available for clinical supervision for day to day clinical work.

TEACHING/ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE:

Participation in the weekly in service teaching programme which includes case conferences, journal clubs and Clinical Audit. There will be an opportunity to carry out teaching sessions for psychiatry trainees, nursing and allied staff, as well as trainees in Furness General Hospital.

Education Supervisor is the lead Consultant for undergraduate education and training for the University of Liverpool and Lancaster University Medical Students in South Cumbria. The SPR would be encouraged to play an active role in developing undergraduate teaching programme and if interested take up the role of a facilitator for medical students weekly problem base learning sessions. There would also be opportunity for organising/conducting OSCE’s and LOCAS examinations.


AUDIT/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES:

All trainees are expected to carry out an audit whilst on the rotation and back up are available from the audit department for more ambitious projects. The trainee will have 2 sessions a week to pursue a research project of their interest.

MANAGEMENT TRAINING:

The trainee will be encouraged to participate in monthly consultant meetings, Medical Advisory Committee meetings and other such management meetings as are appropriate to develop awareness of issues such as Clinical Governance and Strategic Planning.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE:

The trainee would be supported in developing his/her own areas of interest however there is also possibility of including sessions with AOT, EIP or Drug and Alcohol Services in trainees clinical sessions if they fit in with trainees learning objectives.
Trainees time table can be altered if required for their existent research/ special interest commitments.

DESCRIPTION OF ANY SPECIAL INTEREST SESSIONS OFFERED:

The trainee will have 2 sessions a week to pursue his/her special interest.
