StR/ SpR POST DETAILS 2009-2010

DESCRIPTION OF PLACEMENT:

- Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment (Community based work mainly).
- Assertive Outreach Services (Outpatient and Inpatient).

ROLE OF TRAINEE:

  • Working with chronic and complex patient (AOT).
  • Working with acutely unwell patients in their home environment (CRHT).
  • Working within teams (CRHT/AOT).
  • Community-based and inpatient experience (core posting).
  • Working and conducting audit and research in general but specifically among ethnic minorities (20% in Blackburn with Darwen).
  • Organising teaching and training for undergraduates, junior doctors and other professionals in the teams.
  • Management and leadership opportunities in working with team members, junior doctors and medical students. Also management opportunity in assisting Prof Adelekan (College Tutor) in organising the East Lancs Postgraduate training programme.
  • Mental Health Act related activities: assessments, reports, attendance at review meetings.
  • There is an ST1-3 docotr attached to the team.

ON CALL COMMITMENT:

The ST4-6 will be second on call on the East Lancashire rota at an average of 1:10

Nature of duties: The ST4-6 trainee would be the second on call on the East Lancashire (Blackburn and Burnley) psychiatric rota. Hence, he/she would be required to supervise and give advice to junior trainees and medical officers who are the first on call. The duties of the latter would include:

i) Assessment of patients presenting at the A&E department, Royal Blackburn Hospital (acute psychiatric presentations, overdoses, Section 136 assessments etc).
ii) Attendance to duties on the psychiatric unit (Pendleview), Royal Blackburn Hospital as requested.
iii) Liaison with other medical personnel (Ward Managers, Liaison team, Crisis Team, GPs) and other agencies (e.g. Police) to plan care.

1. The ST4-ST6 trainee would be expected to play an active and leadership role in the East Lancashire teaching programme, which takes place every Wednesday afternoon at the McKenzie Postgraduate Centre, Burnley General Hospital. He/she would have the opportunity to supervise and guide junior trainees who would make presentations at the Journal Club, Case Conference and Video Interviewing sessions.
2. The ST4-6 trainee would participate with other senior trainees to give lectures, organize examination practice sessions, video interviewing training, psychiatric quiz contests etc for junior trainees.
3. The ST4-6 trainee would also have the opportunity to present directly at Journal Club and Case Conference meetings.
4. Overall, the ST4-6 trainees are expected to bring fresh ideas and innovations to the East Lancashire training programme.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES:

1. There is opportunity for the ST4-6 trainee to take part in ongoing audits in AOT and CRHTT
2. The trainee would also be encouraged to take a lead by developing and conducting an audit of his/her choice in either or both of the two teams.
3. There is opportunity to do research on ethnic minorities (20% in Blackburn with Darwen)
4. Professor Adelekan has research background. He would therefore be willing to support the interested trainee directly or indirectly in achieving research objectives

MANAGEMENT TRAINING:

1. Prof Adelekan is currently the College Tutor for the rotational training programme in East Lancashire. The ST4-6 trainee would have the opportunity to be actively involved in the planning and production of the training time table, liaising with all participants on the programme including invited speakers.
2. The trainee would be encouraged to attend Consultants meetings as well as Consultants/Managers meetings, as scheduled.
3. The ST4-6 would have the opportunity to chair meetings and events.
