1. DETAILS OF PLACEMENT
The post is community focussed with opportunities through this for
working in partnership with multiple teams. There are AOT, EIS and
CRHT teams in place with which the post holder must interface.
This ST post provides broad experience in general adult psychiatry
at ST4-6 competency level. The post is essentially community based
with CMHTs in the Carlisle and Eden area. Working with two CMHTs
allows experience to be gained in working in both and urban and
rural environments, and with different teams.

2. DETAILS OF ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPERIENCE
TRAINEE WILL GAIN
The ST4-6 will work primarily in community settings working closely
with the CMHT and consultant and will undertake assessment and treatment
of patients with a wide range of psychiatric disorders. They will
manage their own case load with the CMHT participating in CPA, multiagency
risk meetings and liaising with other services, seeking consultant
advice as appropriate. They will liaise closely with more specialist
teams such as AOT, CRHT, inpatient and EIP as the need arises and
there will be opportunities to do special interest sessions with
these teams and others if requested. They will be involved in MHA
work with the CMHTs that they work with.
Consultants will be operating in a “Chambers model”
with New Ways of Working in service delivery, and the trainee will
have the opportunity to get more experience with these innovative
models.
There are 5 sessions with Carlisle CMHT and 1 session with Eden
CMHT, including CPA clinics, assessments MDT meetings, risk management
meetings ( child protection, MAPPA, vulnerable adult).
As members of the multi disciplinary teams the trainees will be
expected to take advantage of the opportunity to learn how other
disciplines, including Nursing, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists
and Social Workers operate.
Any other clinical commitment: liaison/crises team sessions etc
3. JUNIOR DOCTOR SUPPORT AND SUPERVISION
There is usually an FY2 Dr attached to the team who primarily sits
in for outpatient clinics and other assessments with the senior
trainee or the consultant. The FY2 Dr usually has other inpatient
responsibilities as well.
4. ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING
Daytime on-call: Covering urgent assessments in the Carlisle (only)
area(mainly Section 135/136 and MHA assessments) and providing support
for on-call junior doctor at the Carleton clinic. Also provides
support to the CHRT when necessary, and to local GPs for phone advice.
Currently one full day per week (9-5pm).
Out of hours on-call: 1:10 covering the whole of east and west Cumbria
from Whitehaven to Carlisle with consultant supervision.

5. TEACHING / SUPERVISION / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
There are regular attachments for medical students from Newcastle
University. There are ample opportunities to facilitate teaching
sessions for medical students and core trainees (like video teaching,
giving tutorials, small group teaching and case-based discussions).
6. AUDIT / RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The educational supervisor will support research in the department
and audit is an expected part of the attachment.
The trainee will be encouraged to develop or participate in research
activity as part of postgraduate degree or as part of training programme
research experience.
7. MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
There are a number of opportunities to take part in the managerial
processes behind developing the services. The team focus is on streamlining
and improving the efficiency of the services in all its aspects,
to manage an area of high morbidity with a limited resource.
The trainee will be encouraged and supported to develop his/her
own management project.

Other sites and travel required: Some clinics held at the London
Road Community Clinic. The Eden CMHT is based at Penrith Community
Hospital CA11. This is where the Academic meetings hold as well.
An occasional clinic may hold in Kirkby Stephen which is essentially
a 90-mile round trip from Carlisle.
Accommodation: Available. Option of single room, or 3-bedroom furnished
family house within Carleton clinic grounds.
