Use of mobile phone for community work, if home working
will be a feature, then the trainee will be introduced to the Argyll
system for personal safety. There are safety procedures for St Leonard’s
house: fire regulations and a sign in/out board. There will be a
local induction and introduction to the service.
Facilities
At St Leonard’s house, the SpR will have their own
room with computer access, filing cabinet and phone. There is full
secretarial support. There is a library at Ridge Lea hospital holding
psychiatric journals and books with a further general medical library
at the royal Lancaster infirmary (1 mile away).
Supervision
weekly
Teaching/Academic Experience
Participation in the weekly in-service training programme which
includes case conferences, journal clubs and clinical audit. There
will be an opportunity to carry out teaching sessions with SHOs
and encouragement will be given to further develop skills in evidence
based journal club presentations.
Audit/Research Opportunities
All trainees are expected to carry out an audit whilst on the rotation
and back up is available from the audit department for any more
ambitious projects. Audit meetings take place monthly. There is
not a strong ethos of research yet in Lancaster, so there are no
projects to join but encouragement and supervision will be given
for projects undertaken
Management Experience
The Specialist Registrar will be expected to participate in monthly
consultant meetings, the bimonthly medical advisory committee and
other such management meetings as are appropriate to develop an
awareness of issues such as clinical governance and strategic planning.
Additional Experience Available
Because Dr Ashton has started to develop her role in line with the
guidance on New Ways of Working for psychiatrists, there is no inpatient
work in this job. It gives an opportunity to develop skills for
community working, staff liaison, and gain experience working with
the crisis /HTT.
Another option includes special interest sessions with the community
drug team, setting up a dual diagnosis clinic. With the arrival
of Keith Hyde, consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy there may
be an opportunity to develop further psychotherapy skills under
supervision.
