DETAILS OF PLACEMENT

This is a full-time post working within the Adult Eating Disorder Service for Cheshire & Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. This is the only fully comprehensive Eating Disorder Service within the north west and offers the only training posts for junior doctors from levels ST1-6. The Service is delivered around a hub and spoke model with one central hub based at Macclesfield Hospital and three spoke based in Crewe, Chester and the Wirral. The Service is clinically led by a consultant psychiatrist (Dr Jessica Morgan) who is a full-time consultant working in the field of eating disorders.

The placement consists of the following:

1. Outpatient work: the post holder will have the opportunity to be involved in new assessments and regular follow ups of patients with eating problems.

2. The post holder will have the opportunity to offer individual therapy for patients with eating disorders.

3. The post holder will attend and have the opportunity to chair the weekly multi-disciplinary team meeting on the inpatient unit.

4. Multidisciplinary team meetings: the post holder will attend three MDTMs on different days around the catchment area of Cheshire & Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

There is an full-time ST1-3 doctor in the team.

DETAILS OF EXPERIENCE TRAINEE WILL GAIN AND MAIN DUTIES

This is the only ST4-6/SpR post for a trainee in eating disorders. The trainee will learn the specialised skills necessary for risk assessment and management of patients with eating disorders and will also be given the opportunity to become involved in psychotherapeutic work with patients with eating disorders. There are a wide range of psychotherapies delivered within the Service including CBT, CAT and psychodynamic psychotherapy delivered in different modalities as well as the abbreviated therapies of guided self help following a CBT model. The post holder will be able to gain experience of these if requested. In addition we offer experience in the inpatient management of severely malnourished patients and the care of patients with chronic, severe eating disorders who are currently unable to recover at the present time. As such, the post holder will receive training in all aspects of eating disorders necessary to become a specialist within this area or work in part in an Eating Disorder Service.

In addition, there are numerous opportunities for teaching, training and management experience within the Service. Overall the Eating Disorder Service is an area of development within the Trust and as such the post holder can be involved in service development and innovation.

ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING

Approximately 1 in 7. The pay banding is 2B (40%). The on call commitment involves supervising and supporting junior doctors at Macclesfield District General Hospital and working with the local emergency duty team. The on call duties are directly supervised by an on call consultant.

TEACHING / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

There are numerous opportunities to participate in teaching either in the field of eating disorders and the role of the service or in basic aspects of general adult psychiatry (for medical students, foundation and ST trainees). In addition we have a weekly journal club, audit and case conference presentation.

AUDIT/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

We have a large data base of all patients managed by the Service for the past seven years and as such there are numerous opportunities for quantitative research with this novel data set. The post holder will be encouraged to develop a research project within the highly specialised Eating Disorder Service. The educational supervisor, Dr Morgan, will also help the trainee to develop an audit project within the Service.

MANAGEMENT TRAINING

There are numerous opportunities for developing management experience within the Service. These range from developing protocols and service literature to a close involvement in Service development and restructuring. There are also a number of opportunities to participate in shadowing different multi-agency and multi-disciplinary workers.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE

The Eating Disorder Service is an area of major development within the Cheshire & Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and the Service has gradually expanded over the past seven years. Recent new developments are the setting up of a new outpatient service outside the boundaries of the Cheshire &Wirral Partnership NHS Foundation Trust but hosted by this Trust and also the development of a larger, highly specialist inpatient unit. The trainee will be given the opportunity to become involved in any aspect of service development such as these.

DESCRIPTION OF ANY SPECIAL INTEREST SESSIONS OFFERED

At the Eating Disorder Service we are happy to offer special interest sessions but would suggest that anyone taking up these would do so for a minimum of nine months and preferably for two sessions per week in order to gain adequate experience. The specialist interest sessions are predominantly clinical and would obviously involve the potential for close supervision and psychotherapeutic work.
