DESCRIPTION OF PLACEMENT
There are generally 17 patients on the Nelson ward
under the care of the trainer. The clinical obligation of the trainee
would be to be part of the ward round and leading the ward round
at the appropriate stage. The trainee will also manage a follow
up clinic under clinical supervision of a consultant colleague looking
after a Central Manchester community. The trainee would have ready
access to the trainer for all clinical matters with regular weekly
educational supervision.
DUTIES OF SPR AND EXPERIENCE GAINED
This higher specialist core training post offers an
excellent opportunity to practise general psychiatry as part of
an inpatient service and also by interacting with a well-established
Community Mental Health Team through the outpatient work. A trainee
interested in psychopharmacology would gain experience in complex
drug treatments of all major psychiatric disorders with emphasis
on effectiveness and with a blend of academic psychiatry and real
life practice. There will be scope of assessing co-morbid neuropsychiatric
conditions and other life-span disorders. The trainer due to his
role as a site tutor for the Adult general higher specialist training
is supportive of the processes and logistics of the building up
of a meaningful portfolio.
ON CALL COMMITMENT
Day time on call approximately 1 in 8
Night time city wide cover on shift system approx 1 in 18, banded
1B
TEACHING / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
There is regular opportunity of teaching and organising
teaching of 4th year medical students and St1 – ST3 trainees,
making case presentations and chairing journal clubs. There are
also opportunities for OSCE, PBL, foundation training and other
small group teaching on site.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The trainer currently chairs of the audit and effectiveness
committee of the trust, there would be plenty of scope to take a
lead or participate in audits with the help of the robust trust
audit team. The trainer has own research interest in Neuroimaging
and metabolic syndrome in mentally ill. There will be pastoral support
for research activity the trainee wishes to pursue.
MANAGEMENT TRAINING
As the trainer is lead clinician of an inpatient ward
and clinical director for the inpatient service, the trainee would
have plenty of opportunities to be involved in looking at processes
in the ward round and projects around length of stay etc and develop
leadership skills. There are scopes of shadowing the trainer as
a clinical manager and of getting involved in project works.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE
There is scope of getting involved in development
of adult ADHD/life span disorder services as the trainer is currently
involved in the same process. To an interested trainee, there are
possibilities of developing a strong psychopharmacological understanding
to inform the practise and to nurture a neuro-developmental perspective
to screen adult psychiatry population for neuropsychiatric conditions.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL DETAILS
The trainer is currently involved in establishing
a joint clinic with CAMHS consultant colleague for transitional
ADHD patients. There will be opportunity to develop special interest
and research in this area and co-morbidity with other psychiatric
conditions.
