Description of placement
The post is based in a tertiary service for affective disorders,
the Specialist Service for Affective Disorders (SSAD) set up by
Dr Ian Anderson in 2001. The service offers a tertiary clinic for
complex and treatment resistant depressive and bipolar disorders.
Referrals are received from all over the North West of England and
receive a multidisciplinary assessment resulting in recommendations
given to referrers.
In addition there are a limited number of patients taken on for
treatment, mostly from within the MMHSCT, for outpatient psychiatric
treatment or for cognitive behavioural treatment for depressive
disorder or relapse prevention for bipolar disorder. There are links
with an inpatients affective disorders service at the Priory Hospital,
Altrincham and regular supervision and advice are offered. Dr Anderson
is the ECT consultant for Central Manchester.
The Specialist Registrar is expected to take an active part in
the running of the service, in assessments in the tertiary clinic
with ongoing responsibility for a proportion of outpatients of the
service. In addition he/she will receive training in the psychological
treatment programmes in the service and will treat patients under
supervision. He/she will be trained in ECT treatment and supervision
and provide senior input and training for the SHOs who rotate through
the ECT department. There is also multidisciplinary teaching and
teaching of medical students and the post-holder will be expected
to take part in these.
