DETAILS OF PLACEMENT
This is a subspecialty post in Liaison Psychiatry. The post gives
you experience in both hospitals based non-urgent assessments and
outpatient based assessments.
DETAILS OF EXPERIENCE TRAINEE WILL GAIN AND MAIN DUTIES
Trainee will get comprehensive experience in most aspects of Liaison
Psychiatry including:
1- Psychological reaction to physical illnesses.
2- Medically unexplained symptoms.
3- Complex cases of self harm.
4- Co-morbid psychological and physical illnesses.
5- Organic states including epilepsy, dementia and delirium.
6- Issues related to capacity and consent for medical and surgical
treatments.
Trainee will also develop understanding of structure and function
of liaison psychiatry service and different service models.
There is no ST1-3 doctor in the team.
ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING
1:8 day on-call with prospective cover requirement.
1:17 citywide on-call middle tier (SpR) rota (Full-shift rota)
1B pay banding.
TEACHING / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
Ample opportunity to teach, organise teaching and participate in
in-house teaching activities (Foundation, ST Trainees and Medical
Students).
AUDIT/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Prof Guthrie is actively involved in research work. I am currently
not doing any research with her, but it can be arranged by prior
discussion with her, if trainee is interested.
MANAGEMENT TRAINING
There is an opportunity to participate in Length of Stay meetings
held at Manchester Royal Infirmary. These meetings have been successful
in getting liaison psychiatry referrals early, and providing psychiatric
input to general hospital managers to help them in reducing length
of stay.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE
Trainee gets opportunity to participate in weekly in-house academic
meetings. There is also opportunity to attend internationally recognised
courses run by department e.g. Advanced Course in Liaison Psychiatry,
Psychodynamic Interpersonal Therapy course etc.
Trainee can also attend regional and national meetings in Liaison
Psychiatry.
