DETAILS OF PLACEMENT:
Placement is on Oxford Ward, one of the two PICUs
within the Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust. The trainee
will also join the MDT for providing a mental health in-reach team
at HMP Manchester.
EXPERIENCE GAINED AND ROLE OF THE TRAINEE:
The trainee will work as a medical member of the PICU
and Prison multi-disciplinary teams
This will involve:
• supervision of the work of the junior trainee
• assessment of patients on the ward and in prison
• initiating management plans for these patients
• attendance at MDT meetings
• Mental Health Act assessments on these patients when indicated
• Assessment of patients in-need of transfer to PICU (with
other members of MDT)
The trainee will work on Oxford ward as a medical member of the
MDT along with a Core Psychiatric Trainee (currently CT3) and the
Consultant. This will involve attendance at ward review meetings
and ward rounds. It will also involve assessment and review of individual
patients on the ward, including detailed risk assessment. There
is opportunity for liaison with the criminal justice system and
colleagues in Forensic Psychiatry for many patients.
Once satisfactory security clearance to work regularly in the prison
has been obtained, the Specialty Registrar will attend the weekly
team meetings with the Consultant and Associate Specialist and conduct
assessments of inmates in all locations of the prison for two half
days each week.
ON CALL COMMITMENT:
On-call arrangements may change subject to negotiation. Further

1 in 17 full shift, non-resident, rota pattern for out of hours
working operating across the Trust area, thus providing psychiatry
cover to North Manchester General Hospital, Manchester Royal Infirmary
and Wythenshawe Hospital. Out of hours, each hospital site has a
resident ST1-3 trainee and a local on call consultant. The post-holder
will be able to either use their own transport or there will be
taxi provision available to travel around the city. During normal
working hours there is a separate single site rota in operation
at Manchester Royal Infirmary, in which the 8 local ST4-6 higher
trainees participate in to provide middle tier support between the
on call ST1-3 and the on call consultant.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES:
There are extensive research opportunities, with close links to
the main University of Manchester Academic Psychiatry Unit.
MANAGEMENT TRAINING:
The post-holder will have the opportunity to become involved in
the management and service development of the PICU and Prison mental
health service by way of attendance at meetings with Dr Procter.
In addition, Dr Procter Chairs the Trust Resuscitation Committee,
an d the trainee will be able to become involved in the activities
of this committee.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE:
There are extensive opportunities for liaison with Forensic services
and the Criminal Justice system. The post will provide opportunities
for greater experience of the Mental Health Act and the management
of mentally disordered offenders in General Adult Psychiatry settings.

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
This is not a “core” post but there is the opportunity
to modify the timetable to incorporate CMHT work with another Consultant
to provide training recognised as equivalent to that of core post.
