StR/ SpR POST DETAILS 2009-2010

DESCRIPTION OF PLACEMENT:

The post is in Community rehabilitation based in Park House, Manchester Mental Health & Social Care Trust.

EXPERIENCE GAINED AND ROLE OF THE TRAINEE:

1. Outpatient work and supervision of in-patients: Assessment of in- and out-patients from a range of services for placement in a rehabilitation service. Trainees will gain experience in the use of standardised scales to measure psychopathology and social function, both in assessment and management. Experience in managing treatment refractory schizophrenia according to evidence based guidelines and algorithms and also individual patients’ needs and circumstances.

2. Participation in a multi-disciplinary team aiming to habilitate and rehabilitate using a range of psychosocial strategies; and coordinated by regular reviews. Also, appropriate experience of team management and supervision of an ST3.

ON CALL COMMITMENTS:

The SpR will be on the city wide on call rota cover North Manchester General, Wythenshawe and MRI. There are 18 SpRs on the rota. Current pay band is 1B. There is no day time on call duties as part of the rota.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

Audit and research are encouraged and half a day per week protected time is available for research. Dr. Drake supervises research as part of postgraduate or undergraduate degree courses on the whole, but sometimes has specific projects available. Audits are supported and supervised.

MANAGEMENT TRAINING:

SpRs are encouraged to provide supervision to the junior trainee in the team. SpRs are encouraged to participate in specific management training.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING AVAILABLE:

There are many opportunities to teach medical students, especially attached 4th years; also experience examining them. There are opportunities to teach ST doctors and other disciplines (e.g. social workers).
