Description of placement
The postholder will work at North Manchester General Hospital
which is the base site for the city-wide Department of Psychological
Medicine, consisting of over thirty nurses, one NHS consultant (the
postholder’s educational and clinical supervisor) as well
as an SHO. Additionally, there is a very active academic Department
of Liaison Psychiatry based on Manchester Royal Infirmary. The postholder’s
responsibilities will include routine consultation – liaison
psychiatry at North Manchester General Hospital as well as regular
outpatient clinics consisting of both new patients and follow-ups.
A balance between single assessments and longer contacts with patients
is encouraged. The postholder also has the opportunity to participate
in active service development. There are opportunities for audit
and research. The timetable includes two sessions of research time
and two sessions of special interest time. The postholder also attends
a specialist liaison psychiatry clinic – at present with rheumatology.
Because of the large multidisciplinary team working within the
service, there are also opportunities for the postholder to participate
in day-to-day and weekly clinical supervision sessions with A&E
liaison nurses, both at North Manchester General Hospital and at
South Manchester University Hospitals Trust.
There are also opportunities for becoming involved in medical education,
both of medical students and for SHOs in psychiatry, up to and including
participating in the organisation of MRCPsych Part II exams and
mock OSCE examinations which are held at North Manchester General
Hospital.
The postholder is encouraged to participate in the service development
activities of the supervising consultant.
