StR/ SpR POST DETAILS 2009-2010

DESCRIPTION OF PLACEMENT:

The post is in Liaison Psychiatry based at Park House, North Manchester general Hospital, Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust.

EXPERIENCE GAINED AND ROLE OF THE TRAINEE:

1) Outpatient Experience: Liaison Psychiatry OutPatient Clinic at Park House on Tuesday mornings seeing new referrals from different specialities such as Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Oncology, Bariatric Surgery etc and also follow-up patients.

2) Rheumatology Liaison Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic at NMGH on Wednesday mornings. Patients referred usually have fibromyalgia, arthritis or chronic fatigue syndrome with concurrent psychological difficulties.

3) Ward Referrals: Routine Liaison Psychiatry Consultations at NMGH. There is a balance between single one off assessments and patients requiring longer term follow-up.

There is an ST1-3 doctor in the team.

ON CALL COMMITMENTS:

The SPR will be on the citywide on call rota covering NMGH, Wythenshawe Hospital and MRI. There are 18 SpR’s currently on the rota. We work shifts and the payband is 1B. There are no daytime on call duties as part of the rota at NMGH.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

There are plenty of opportunities in this job to teach medical students and junior doctors including facilitating PBL sessions for 4th year medical students. There are also opportunities to get involved in teaching A and E Liaison Nurses and junior doctors from the General Hospital.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

The trainees are encouraged to participate in research and use the half day per week protected time for this. Audits are supported and supervised especially audits in Liaison Psychiatry as per the Royal College Curriculum.

MANAGEMENT TRAINING:

Again, trainees are encouraged to develop their management skills in a number of areas such as service development, clinical and educational supervision of junior doctor and supervision of A and E Liaison Nurses.

ADDITIONAL TRAINING AVAILABLE:

- Palliative Care MDT meetings on Thursday mornings. It’s a pleasure working with such a friendly, enthusiastic and patient centred team

- Supervising ST3 doctor who sees patients in the Diabetes Liaison Psychiatry Clinics and to see referrals from ITU

- Weekly educational Liaison Psychiatry departmental meetings organised by Prof Guthrie wherein there are opportunities for case/journal presentation

- Opportunities to attend regional Departmental meetings in the Speciality

- Plans to develop a perinatal service are underway
