1. DETAILS OF PLACEMENT (LOCATION, POPULATION, INPATIENT
OR OUTPATIENT, BEDS)
This is a specialist post in Liaison psychiatry covering North Manchester
General Acute Hospital which includes a specialist infective diseases
unit. The local population has quite high levels of deprivation
and there are high levels of alcohol misuse.
The role involves assessing and giving advice to the general medical
and surgical teams regarding patients with both mental health and
physical ill health. There is also supervision of the liaison nursing
team.
The service is in the process of being re-configured. Although the
bulk of the clinical contact will be in North Manchester, there
may be the opportunity of seeing General Hospital patients at Manchester
Royal Infirmary as well.

2. DETAILS OF ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPERIENCE
TRAINEE WILL GAIN
Outpatient Work: The trainee will run two outpatient clinics weekly,
these clinics consist of a general Liaison and rheumatology liaison
clinic. The trainee will gain extensive experience of liaison psychiatry
including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia. The trainee
will also gain experience of managing and allocating referrals.
Multi-disciplinary Work: Attending the weekly palliative care MDT
gives good experience of MDT work between psychiatry and medical
teams. There are also plenty of opportunities to attend Best Interests
meetings and undertake capacity assessments.
Inpatient Work (medical wards): Activities include attending the
regular weekly ward rounds and taking part in assessing and managing
patients on the general medical and surgical wards (under supervision
of Dr Longson). This may involve liaising with other services (like
social services, occupational therapists, medical and surgical teams)
in order to obtain further information, develop management plans
or facilitate discharge.
Supervision: The trainee is responsible for supervision of the
liaison nursing team based at NMGH.
3. JUNIOR DOCTOR SUPPORT AND SUPERVISION
There is an CT1-3 doctor in the team and the opportunity to be the
main provider of CT 1-3 supervision under the supervision of Dr.
Longson.
4. ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING
Daytime on-call: Single days 9am-9.30pm currently 1:17. In partnership
with the consultant oncall you will be covering urgent assessments
across Manchester including Wythenshawe, MRI and NMGH (mainly Section
135/136 and MHA assessments) and providing support for on-call junior
doctors at all three sites.
Out of hours on-call: City-wide rota (covering MRI, Wythenshawe
Hospital and NMGH) similar to daytime on-call but with less consultant
input. Currently 1:17 with nights split into 4 weekdays and 3 day
weekends and daytime weekend.

5. TEACHING / SUPERVISION / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
There are regular attachments from medical students along with students
on SSC and Project Option modules. There is the opportunity to facilitate
PBL groups and OSCE training for the fourth year medical students
throughout the year.
There is the opportunity to facilitate weekly teaching sessions
for medical students and core trainees (like video teaching, giving
tutorials, small group teaching and case-based discussions). There
is also the opportunity to be the trainee representative on the
Medical Education Committee.
6. AUDIT / RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The educational supervisor will support research in the department
and audit is an expected part of the attachment.
The trainee will be encouraged to develop or participate in research
activity as part of postgraduate degree or as part of training programme
research experience.
7. MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
There are plenty of opportunities to take part in management projects
and undertake leadership activities. There is the opportunity to
take part in service redesign and trust protocol development. It
is possible to undertake SUI reviews and provide reports.
8. ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE
It is possible to arrange supervision of a liaison psychotherapy
case during the placement.
