Description of placement
The trainer is one of four General Adult Psychiatrists
and provides a service to the population of the North West sector
of Oldham (age group 16 – 64). There are also consultants
in liaison psychiatry and substance misuse psychiatry.
The unit treats the fill range of patients requiring specialist
mental health services. Trainer and trainee relate to inpatent and
outpatient services and to a well developed community mental health
team. Assertive outreach and early intervention services are being
developed.
The North West sector is a largely urban area with a high degree
of economic deprivation and a large ethnic minority population (mainly
south asian). Transcultural psychiatry, working with interpreters
and addressing the needs of asylum seekers are a major element of
the work.
Depending on the trainee’s level of experience, they may
take on full clinical responsibility (under consultant supervision)
for a cohort of inpatients and outpatients.
