1. DETAILS OF PLACEMENT (LOCATION, POPULATION, INPATIENT OR OUTPATIENT, BEDS)
The post is inpatient based in 22 bedded acute admission ward. There are two general adult inpatients wards Southside and Northside wards. Each ward is covered by a consultant. This placement is based on Northside ward with Dr Stewart’s team.
Depending on the trainee’s level of experience, they may take on full clinical responsibility (under consultant supervision) for a cohort of inpatients.

2. DETAILS OF ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPERIENCE TRAINEE WILL GAIN

Inpatient Work: Activities include attending the regular ward rounds and taking part in assessing and managing specific cases (under supervision of Dr Stewart). This may also involve liaising with other services (like social services, occupational therapists, sheltered accommodation, day support, etc.) to enable patients integrate back into society. The placement provides an excellent opportunity in assessment and management of acute psychiatric presentations and relapses in chronic mental illnesses with emphasis on MDT work.
The inpatient team works closely with a very active home treatment team which facilitate early discharges and provide support for inpatients during leave periods.

Outpatient Work: There is an opportunity to negotiate outpatient clinic experience with the community consultants and have Community Work experience.
Medico legal work: There is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in mental health tribunals and report writing.

3. JUNIOR DOCTOR SUPPORT AND SUPERVISION
There is an FY2 doctor in the team. Providing supervision and support will be part of the post holder responsibilities.

4. ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING
Daytime on-call: No on-calls between 0900-1700, as this is covered by a consultant rota.
Out of hours on-call: Covering urgent assessments in Oldham and providing support for on-call junior doctor out of hours. Currently 1:8- approximately one session per week.

5. TEACHING / SUPERVISION / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
The trainee has the opportunity to provide teaching to the junior doctors during induction and weekly teaching sessions.
The supervisor also supports the trainee in attending PBLs and OSCE exam organised on other sites.

6. AUDIT / RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The educational supervisor will support research in the department and audit is an expected part of the attachment.
The trainee will be encouraged to develop or participate in research activity as part of postgraduate degree or as part of training programme research experience.

7. MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
In Pennine Care Foundation Trust provides a great opportunity for the trainees to get involved in committees and attend management meetings.
The Trainer is a lead consultant and that helps in using supervision time to improve the trainee management experience by discussing topics.
There are a number of opportunities to take part in the managerial processes behind developing the services.
The trainee will be encouraged and supported to develop his/her own management project.
The SpRs in Oldham are encouraged to attend the weekly consultant meeting to gain more management experience.
