1. DETAILS OF PLACEMENT (LOCATION, POPULATION, INPATIENT OR OUTPATIENT, BEDS)
The post is based at West Strand House, which is a new purpose built community mental health facility near the centre of Preston, Lancashire. The building is shared between the single point of access (primary care mental health team), the complex care and treatment team (CCTT), the crisis resolution and home treatment team (CRHTT) and the recovery team (step-down care).
Dr Richard Gater is a Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at the University of Manchester and an Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist in Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust. He provides medical input for the patients referred to Single point of access and the patients of the Recovery team in Preston.
ST4-6 trainee placed with Dr Gater will get opportunities to improve his/her clinical, teaching and management skills as detailed below.

2. DETAILS OF ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPERIENCE TRAINEE WILL GAIN

Outpatient and community work: Assessment, formulation, diagnosis, risk-assessment, management planning (following evidence based-practice), recording and corresponding/liaising with GPs and mental health professionals for 1-2 new referrals from primary care each week. Reviews, assessments and CPA meetings for patients, usually held at West Strand House, occasionally at patient’s place of residence. This involves working closely with various mental health professionals of the Single point of access (PCMHT) and Recovery team and also the complex care and treatment team (CCTT) and CRHTT in assessment, formulation, risk-assessment, management planning (following evidence based-practice) and recording, plus corresponding/liaising with GPs and other mental health professionals. There is opportunity to discuss every case with Consultant trainer, and regular workplace based assessment (ACE, min-ACE, CBD) of cases seen. The cases seen reflect the difficulties and range of diagnoses seen by a consultant working in general adult community psychiatry. Assessments and reviews are carried out in the context of Trust policies, national guidelines and other implementations of clinical governance.
Team Meetings: Attending team meetings with the Primary Care Mental Health Team and Recovery Team will help to develop skills in multi-professional working.

3. JUNIOR DOCTOR SUPPORT AND SUPERVISION
There will be a GPVTS trainee in the team. Providing supervision and support will be part of the post holder responsibilities.

4. ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING
Out of hours on-call: ST4-6 trainee to Dr Gater is a part of 2nd on-call Rota. ST4-6 trainee should offer support and supervision to the junior doctors of Preston, Chorley and Ormskirk during their on-calls.
Banding: 1B (40%)

5. TEACHING / SUPERVISION / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
Dr Gater is responsible for the ‘Mind and movement’ module of year 4 medical students. Therefore, Dr Gater’s ST4-6 trainee will get the opportunity to actively involved in medical student teaching including tutorials, PBL sessions, OSCE practice, supervising medical students’ placement at West Strand House and teaching medical students in the out-patient clinics.
There are ample opportunities to facilitate teaching sessions for core trainees (chairing weekly teaching sessions, interview skills training etc)

6. AUDIT / RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
Dr Gater is a Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry at the University of Manchester. He will support research in the department and audit is an expected part of the attachment.
The trainee will be encouraged to develop or participate in research activity as part of postgraduate degree or as part of training programme research experience.

7. MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
Preston mental health recovery service is a newly established team. Therefore, ST4-6 trainee will be encouraged to participate in clinical governance and management activities and can be a part of service development.
The trainee will be encouraged and supported to develop his/her own management project.

8. ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE
Trainees will be encouraged to attend training courses and special interest sessions

9. IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL DETAILS (FACILITIES etc)
Office – Dr Gater’s ST4-6 trainee share his/her office with Dr Wood’s ST4-6 trainee and the junior doctors.
Car park – Car parking is available at Lodge street, 5 minutes away from West Strand House. A free parking permit is available at the reception, West Strand House
Secretary support – Maureen Britton (01772773501) is Dr Gater’s medical secretary. There are other support secretaries to share the work load
Other sites and travel required? – Trainee is expected to drive his/her own vehicle. Home visits should be arranged in close liaison with the members of the multidisciplinary team. Higher specialist trainees are expected to travel during their on-call should the need arise
