DETAILS OF PLACEMENT
This post focuses on clinical work in the community and in hospital
with patients of the assertive outreach team. The team has been
in operation since 2001 and is located in a modern community base
near the centre of Preston which also accommodates other community
teams. The inpatient work is with the inpatient ward teams at the
Royal Preston Hospital.
The adult mental health service in Preston, and its consultant psychiatrists,
are organised into functionally specialised teams. These include
the crisis/home treatment team, community mental health team, primary
mental health team, early intervention in psychosis, homeless team,
and drug and alcohol teams. There is a specialist psychotherapy
service.
DETAILS OF EXPERIENCE TRAINEE WILL GAIN AND MAIN DUTIES
Under supervision, the Specialty Registrar takes a leading role
in managing selected patients of the assertive outreach team through
different phases of their care, encompassing community and hospital.
You will work within two multidisciplinary teams and provide an
important bridge between the inpatient service and the assertive
outreach team in the community.
With other members of the team, assessment of new referrals to
the assertive outreach team, review and management of existing patients
of the team, CPA reviews, and assessment and management of patients
who are deteriorating or in crisis. This work takes place in patients’
own homes or at the community team base. Other work as required,
e.g. MAPPA meetings, safeguarding procedures, Post Incident Reviews.
Management of inpatients on the inpatient wards at the Royal Preston
Hospital. Writing reports for, and attending, Managers’ hearings
and MHRTs.
Core work includes medication management, teamwork in devising
and delivering complex care plans, Mental Health Act work, understanding
and working with treatment resistance and poor treatment adherence.
There is anST1-3 doctor in the team.
ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING
On Call frequency 1 in 9.
Cover is for Central and West Lancashire.
Duties: offering advice and supervision for ST 1 – 3 and trainees,
Mental Health Act work, and emergency care.
Clinical supervision by duty consultant on call and subsequently
by educational supervisor.
TEACHING / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
Teaching and clinical supervision of the ST 3 trainee.
Teaching medical students.
AUDIT/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The department is participating in the CEQUEL trial.
The Trust has a major commitment to research through the Academic
Psychiatry Department and Mental Health Research Network staff,
based at the Lantern Centre in Preston
MANAGEMENT TRAINING
Opportunities with Lead Consultant and Medical Director, local
Acute Care Forum, Medical Advisory Committee. Projects have arisen
which are suitable for Specialty Registrars, e.g. participating
in the Trust’s GP Communications Strategy.
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE
Possibilities include forensic psychiatry, early intervention,
community mental health team/outpatient work, psychotherapy training,
neurology clinics and management training.
