1. DETAILS OF PLACEMENT (LOCATION, POPULATION, INPATIENT
OR OUTPATIENT, BEDS)
This is an endorsement post which is based at CBU, which is an inpatient
unit for patients with alcohol and/or drug problems. This is a regional
unit providing tier 4 service. The unit has 36 beds (12 female and
24 male) and offers valuable experience in dealing with the patient
group who has other complex needs like mental health or physical
health problems.

2. DETAILS OF ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPERIENCE
TRAINEE WILL GAIN
Outpatient Work: The trainee will have an opportunity to do pre
admission assessments for patients with alcohol related problems.
The trainee will also have an opportunity to do Community Drug Clinics
(at Bolton/Slaford/Central Lancs/Blackburn with Darwen/Manchester/Wigan
and Leigh).
Inpatient Work: Activities include attending the regular weekly
ward rounds and taking part in assessing and managing specific cases
(under supervision). This may also involve liaising with other services
(like Inpatient therapy team, Alcohol and Drug Services key workers,
social services, Rehab units, Patient’s psychiatric team etc.,
). The trainee is encouraged to do 1 or two admissions per week
which will help in assessing the physical health needs and also
devising patient specific treatment plan with guidance form the
CBU protocols.
Medico legal work: There is limited opportunity for medico-legal
work in this post. However there will be an opportunity to carry
out MHA assessments in patients suffering from Delirium Tremens
or with co-morbid mental health problems.
3. JUNIOR DOCTOR SUPPORT AND SUPERVISION
There is an ST1-3 doctor in the team. There is a core trainee attached
to the team and providing supervision and support will be part of
the post holder responsibilities. There are three SAS doctors working
on the unit.
4. ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING
Daytime on-call: No day time on-call commitments.
Out of hours on-call: 1 in 12, at Meadowbrook Site
Banding: 1b
5. TEACHING / SUPERVISION / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
There are ample opportunities to facilitate teaching sessions for
medical students and core trainees.
6. AUDIT / RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The educational supervisor will support research in the department
and audit is an expected part of the attachment.
The trainee will be encouraged to develop or participate in research
activity as part of postgraduate degree or as part of training programme
research experience.
7. MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
There are a number of opportunities to take part in the managerial
processes behind developing the services. The trainee will be encouraged
and supported to develop his/her own management project.
8. ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE
The trainee will have an opportunity to attend motivational interviewing
course and inpatient therapy groups.
