DETAILS OF PLACEMENT

Placement in General Adult Psychiatry within a District General Hospital, covering a population of 216,000 within the town of Rochdale and environs. Placement involves working within a sector team responsible for the North- East of Rochdale. Rochdale continues to offer an integrated service providing continuity of community care, and hospital based care (in- patients), so that trainees can continue to benefit from gaining experience of both models of care.
The sector team works closely with an established Community Mental Health Team which supports the caseload of one other sector consultant. The team also still retains some patients supported by the Early- Intervention Team and offers clinical input on a regular basis to the Hospital Crisis Team. There are also close links locally with a range of other services and agencies including the Mentally Disordered Offenders Team and agencies within the voluntary sector – including homeless people’s services for which the team maintains clinical responsibility.

In-patient duties are carried out on a 24- bedded acute ward which is shared with one other working age consultant.

DETAILS OF EXPERIENCE TRAINEE WILL GAIN AND MAIN DUTIES

Undertaking clinical assessment, diagnosis and management of working age adults with a range of mental health difficulties of varying levels of complexity.

Offer appropriate pharmacological, psychological and social interventions to a caseload of patients with mental disorders.
Offer support and clinical supervision to junior trainees and non- medical colleagues as appropriate and when required carry out work- based assessments of trainees’ competence.

Participate in aspects of the departmental teaching programme- including formal teaching, leading journal club sessions, interview training, Balint Groups and case presentations. Formal and informal teaching to trainees within the sector team and to non- medical colleagues.

Regularly provide information and feedback and foster good working relationships with patients and carers’ and support junior colleagues in doing so.

Provide clinical input, advice and leadership to affiliated clinical teams such as the community mental health team. Autonomously lead multi-disciplinary care-planning reviews for complex patients, ward- rounds for in-patients and participate appropriately in other multi-agency meetings such as Public Protection meetings and Child Safeguarding meetings.

There is anST1-3 doctor in the team.

ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING

1:8 on call rota. 1B pay banding.

TEACHING / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

Availability of Foundation Trainee and CT trainee within the team. Medical Students undergo placement within the department on an intermittent basis.

AUDIT/RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Trainer responsible for coordinating medical audit projects within the department.

Formal research not routine.

Previous trainees have received support to carry out and publish their research- based activity – including case reports, literature reviews, poster publications, surveys.

MANAGEMENT TRAINING

Participation in Trust Drugs and Therapeutic Committee with opportunities for undertaking specific tasks such as the development of guidelines and protocols

Participation in local and Trust Medical Staff Committee meetings

Participation in Divisional Governance meetings

Participation in Trust Access and Liaison Work Programme (Steering) Group.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE

Opportunities available to gain experience working with patients with specific personality disorders.

Support available for trainees who may have an interest in working using psychodynamic psychotherapeutic approaches.

Trainer currently involved in training in Group Analytic Psychotherapy.
