1. DETAILS OF PLACEMENT (LOCATION, POPULATION, INPATIENT
OR OUTPATIENT, BEDS)
Stepping Hill Hospital is a large DGH serving a population of 300,000
and covering Stockport and High Peak. The Stockport area is divided
into three sectors with seven Consultant patches. There is a variety
of deprivation and affluence and a range of urban to rural settings.
There are two adult general in-patient wards with 46 beds, a 10
bedded PICU, and 15 bedded step-down older people’s rehabilitation
unit on site. There is also a 19 bedded step-down intensive rehabilitation
unit at Heathfield House.
This is a general adult placement involving multi-disciplinary
working with the various Community Teams, Crisis Team, and Inpatient
teams.
Core Placement: Yes .This is an excellent opportunity
for the trainee to get experienced in both Inpatient and Outpatient
work and to gain competencies.

2. DETAILS OF ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES AND CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
TRAINEE WILL GAIN
Three out-patient clinics each week consisting of new, follow-up
and emergency appointments.
Monitoring of in-patients and attending weekly ward rounds
Weekly CPA review meetings
Management meetings with the Community Teams/Consultant meeting
Supervision and training of core trainees
Teaching of core trainees and medical students
Chairing journal club and case conferences
Outpatient Work: The trainee will run three outpatient clinics
(1 New Patient Referral clinic, 1 Emergency appointments clinic,
1 follow up clinic. Trainee will attend 1 CPA Review clinic every
week. The trainee will gain extensive experience of a very busy
community patch, with high levels of SMI.The trainee will experience
excellent Liaison work with Community team staff, Crisis team staff
in the management of patients reviewed in Urgent clinics.
Allocation Meeting: Attending the weekly allocation and review
meeting with the Community Mental Health Team will help to develop
skills in multi-professional working.
Community Work: The trainee will have opportunity to carry out
domiciliary visits to assess and manage patients in their own homes
environments.
Inpatient Work ( Usually 6 inpatients (Range 2-13 inpatients):
Activities include attending the regular weekly ward rounds and
taking part in assessing and managing specific cases (under supervision
of Dr Joshi). This may also involve liaising with other services
(like social services, occupational therapists, sheltered accommodation,
day support, etc.) to enable patients integrate back into society.
Trainee is expected to involve in regular supervision of Core/GPVTS
trainees working with Dr Joshi in patient work.
Medico legal work: The trainee will be encouraged to carry out
MHA assessments, prepare medico-legal reports and reports for MHRT
and Manager’s Hearings under direct supervision of Dr Joshi.
There will be also an expectation that the trainee will develop
skills in presenting evidence during these proceedings.
Any other clinical commitment: Sometimes expected to do Liaison
assessments in General Hospital.
3. JUNIOR DOCTOR SUPPORT AND SUPERVISION
There is a CT1-3 doctor/GPVTS trainee in the team and providing
supervision and support will be part of the post holder responsibilities.
4. ON CALL COMMITMENT AND PAY BANDING
1 in 8 rota: 24 hour on call. 2nd Tier on call with Consultant supervision.Post
on call off after week end on call. Compensatory rest periods post
on call if needed.
Banding: 1B banding (40%).
5. TEACHING / SUPERVISION / ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
Provision of teaching is encouraged .There are ample opportunities
to facilitate teaching sessions for medical students and core trainees
(like video teaching, giving tutorials, small group teaching and
case-based discussions, CASC practice for core trainees, etc).
Supervision of trainees whilst on call.
Academic activities:
Weekly journal club and case conference
Attendance at SpR training days.
6. AUDIT / RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
The educational supervisor will support research as part of Special
Interest activity and audit is an expected part of the attachment.
The trainee will be encouraged to develop or participate in research
activity as part of postgraduate degree or as part of training programme
research experience.
Trainee will have 1 day per week of Special Interest session which
can be utilised for Research experience or Clinical Special Interest
sessions as required. Trainer will support discussion about various
options in supervision.
7. MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE
Attending weekly Consultant meetings
Chairing CPAs/Community Team meetings/ward rounds
Opportunity to shadow the Lead Consultant for senior managers meeting
at Trust Headquarters.
Trainee will be encouraged to involve in managerial processes like
drawing up Team Investigation Reports on SUI s, etc.
There are a number of opportunities to take part in the managerial
processes behind developing the services. The trainee will be encouraged
and supported to develop his/her own management project.
