DESCRIPTION OF PLACEMENT:
Ideal for higher trainee who has already completed one year of
General Adult Psychiatry training at ST5+ or SPR level and who wishes
to gain experience of working with clients At Risk of developing
psychosis or in the first 3 years of a psychotic illness. Emphasis
is on the recovery model and providing client-centred care. Work
will be with outpatients, the Early Intervention team and inpatients
as well as CRT. On call commitments is about 1:8.
ROLE OF TRAINEE:
1. Outpatient work: The trainee will build up his or her own caseload.
These patients can either be seen in clinic or preferably seen in
the community with the care coordinators.
2. Supervision of in-patients: (day to day management being handled
by the SHO). The SPR will attend the weekly ward round.
3. Attending the weekly meetings with the Early Intervention Team:
This will help to develop skills in multi-professional working.
4. Training in the CPA: The trainee will attend the CPA reviews
for all patients that they are actively involved in.
5. Supervision: There will be one hour of individual supervision
per week with the trainer, Dr Huda, and a formal review of progress
as per the current ST procedures.
6. Management Training: The trainee will be invited to attend
consultant meetings, Early Intervention Service Development Meetings
and to take part in audit activities.
7. Participation in the On-Call rota (approximately 1 in 8): Consultant
cover will always be provided.
8. Community round: The trainee will have opportunity to conduct
joint home visits with a care coordinator to known patients.
This post is a core placement but best as a 2nd
or 3rd year of General Adult ST 4-6 due to specialised nature of
post seeing a restricted range of presentations.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES:
If trainee has any research interests, he or she can be allocated
time. If interested in researching in early psychosis, working with
this client group is an ideal opportunity.
MANAGEMENT TRAINING:
Each trainee would be expected to attend the consultants’
weekly management meetings (Wednesday pm) and to take on an area
of service-related management to work on in more depth, with the
respective medical or non-medical manager, in the course of their
year in Tameside. Trainees are also expected to participate actively
in organising their on-call and other duties.
Dr Huda is chair of the MSC and is active in Service Development
e.g. for EIT and Adult ADHD, so there are opportunities in these
fields.
ADDITIONAL TRAINING AVAILABLE:
Dr Huda also works with Transitional clients (16-19year olds);
there are therefore opportunities in this area.
Trainees can arrange special interest sessions with Lesley Peters;
the Substance Misuse consultant locally. There is also a local secure
rehabilitation service which makes it possible to arrange special
interest sessions with, both the inpatient management and assessment
of referrals side.
EIT service gives opportunities to acquire lots of additional experiences
such as more opportunity to use CBT with their clients.
